The old Muslim two-step
Monday, August 7, 2006 at 09:07AM Is it just me, or is there something wrong with having 'senior Muslim police officers'? Imagine having senior police officers described as 'senior Christian police officers' and you will get my drift. In one way this ought to help us understand that dealing with Islam present Western societies with problems you don't get from other religions. For Islam is both a religion and a cultural and political movement. What Muslims do therefore is 'dance' from one foot to the other to wrongfoot their Western 'partner' depending on which suits there purpose. Thus Western society with its concept of separation not just between church and state but (far more importantly) between life and faith - a notion that worldview does not include both, the one affecting the other - simply find it hard to cope and appease which wing of the Islam life/faith is offended currently.
So what is the answer? Simple. 1. We in the West need to start grasping that our own Western worldview, whatever it is, is also a 'religion' and a matter of faith which affects every area of life, personal and national. 2. Whether it is Islam 'religion' or Islam 'culture' we are dealing with recognise its exclusive aspirations (ie. refusal to integrate) and make sure it knows it is a minority faith and culture and that both are subject to the laws of whatever Western country they are in. In other words, stop appeasing them.
