Anglican Communion compromises God's teachings (again)
Tuesday, February 20, 2007 at 09:05AM For the record, I am a big fan of unity too (see my book The Virtual Church which sets out what the Bible itself means by unity in every age). But not unity at the cost of core doctrine. The English generally and the Anglican Church specifically have always been masters of compromise. The trouble is that compromise over core beliefs is a non-negotiable biblically speaking. Once a church moves away from its core principles it ceases to be 'church'.
There are many god churches and church leaders within the Anglican system still (if there were not then the liberal hierarchy would have already got their way completely) - I worship in one. The latest compromise allows elements of the US Episcopal Church in communion (even though many Anglican leaders yesterday would not share communion worship with them - and rightly so) in this communique from Tanzania. What the liberals have yet to learn is that God does not compromise over his teaching. He might 'allow' for human stupidity and sin in dealing with us but that is not the same thing as watering down doctrine on critical issues that compromise the whole role of church (the body of Christ) in the world.
Archbishop Rowan Williams has undoubtedly used his intelligence in holding on to a visible (if not spiritual) unity. Sadly for him and other liberals who pursue unity at the expense of God's Word being human 'intelligence' is no bulwark against being foolhardy actions. As Bertrand Russell said, "So far as I can remember, there is not one word in the Gospels in praise of intelligence." The human guardians (church leaders) of God's Word are not 'employed' to barter away the Word of God. Their business is obedience to that Word - or they have 'no business'. The Bible's highest regard is for 'wisdom' not 'intelligence'.
After all, it is hard to see what actual purpose gay church leaders serve. God is not only NOT listening to them (he doesn't hear the prayer so any unrepentant sinners of course - John ) and just imagine what service they are giving in their self-justifying unrepentant sin to their congregations when Christ is not in them or with them! Their only useful place is surely outside the church (unless they repent, as we Christians had to) their old sinful lives and turn from their sin.
