The Iraq Inquiry Is a Total Waste of Time and Money

The Iraq Inquiry is something of a ludicrous spectacle. A host of current and former senior politicians attempting to justify their positions (usually in a hand-wringing state) before a panel of lawyers - those who had long ago made up their minds that the invasion of Iraq was somehow 'illegal'.

It is this concept of international legality that intrigues me. Who says? The United Nations? I didn't vote for them, did you? The EU? Ditto. In fact, there is no such thing a 'international law' other than that which is 'voluntary'. Why so? Because no one can enforce it. Any 'law' that can be enforced is not worth the paper its written on. The reality is that 'international law' is an oxymoron.

Let me explain. The reason the recent Copenhagen Summit failed was ... nationalism. The reason the UN and EU strategies and plans all come to nothing is ... nationalism. And quite rightly so. The nation states are key to the prosperity of a free and democratic people. Once you usurp that national authority and attempt to utilise 'trans-nationalism' national leaders must, ultimately, place the welfare of their own people first - that's why they were voted in. Is it not thus when we act on behalf of our own families?

The family remains the cornerstone of all civilised society. the nation state is that same family ethic scaled up. Trans-nationalism, however, usurps the status of 'family' and acts not in the interest of any family but in the interests of political elites who seek to usurp 'family' or national power to themselves - in the latter case when no one voted for them

The US went ot war in Iraq to seek 'regime change'. WMD was always incidental to that enterprise for the US (and me, as I have often said). The British Government - however Tony Blair and co spun it towards WMD for domestic PR purposes - backed our closest and most trusted allies (forget the Europeans, they are not really 'on our side' at all) to stop a 'serial invader of other people's country's', once and for all.

That, after all, is a highly moral reason for nations, collectively, going to war, as we did when Hitler invaded other people's country's. The rest is all hot air. Case closed - except for the leftwing lawyers of course, who now want their pound of anti-intellectual flesh (and a great deal of cash for their involvement of course).

Thanks Pops. If only someone with the money of Big Oil or Fox News or some other 'evil empire' might think so! Sadly in these days of growing liberal decadance in the West Truth and big bucks are rarely loving bedfellows, n'est pas? But I'd rather know a Barnabas like you, than a host of MSM editors.

Excellent point. I'd never thought to consider international law as a bit of an oxymoron.
